Rockfall kills 14 year old girl in Montana’s Glacier National Park

A 14 year old girl from Utah has died in Montana’s Glacier National Park after falling rocks hit her family’s vehicle.

The US National Park Service says the rockfall happened at about 7 o’clock Monday evening near the East Tunnel on Going-to-the-Sun Road.

The rocks, which parks officials say were about 12-inches in diameter, fell from an unknown height, hit the top of the vehicle, and shattered the rear windshield.

The teen was too unstable to be airlifted to hospital and died while being transported via ground ambulance.

Her parents and two other children inside the vehicle were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Park officials say the last fatal injury from a rockfall on Going-to-the-Sun Road was in 1996.
