Horizon School Division schools remain closed Monday due to extreme cold

Due to extreme cold temperatures all schools in the Horizon School Division will be closed Monday, January 15th.

According to the school division, the decision is a result of forecasted temperatures Monday morning around -40 degrees Celsius in the region, with some areas expected to see temperatures dropping below -50 degrees Celsius with the windchill.

According to a statement on the division’s social media page, “We hope that this early notice will allow parents and staff the time to make alternate arrangements.” The statement goes on to say that schools are expected to resume on Tuesday, with the current cold front expected to start moving east on Monday afternoon.

On Thursday, January 11th the Horizon school division was one of two local school systems that announced their classes and buses were closed Friday, January 12th because of temperatures that were expected to drop below -40 degrees Celsius.

As of Friday afternoon the Livingstone Range School Division, which is the second division that closed schools due to weather, anticipated their schools will be open on Monday, January 15th. As of 12 p.m. Sunday, January 14th there is no update on if classes and bussing will resume as scheduled.
