Federal government investing $4.2 million in southern Alberta rail network

The federal government announcing $4.2-million to improve components of southern Alberta’s rail network.

The project involves upgrading Forty Mile’s Transload Facility at Foremost as well as improving the Cardston Subdivision line.

The existing infrastructure restricts the number of cars that can be moved on the rail line to 25 cars at a time, which reduces capacity and efficiency.

Officials say improvements will boost the line’s annual number of agricultural carloads for export from 263 last year to 4,000 in the short-term and 15,000 in the long-term.

The project is also expected to create about 95 jobs during construction.
