Southern Alberta rural crime sees decline in first quarter of 2024: RCMP

Crime in the rural parts of southern Alberta saw a decrease in crime in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

According to new numbers released by the Southern Alberta District RCMP, the rural area saw 373 fewer crimes in the first three months of the year. The most notable declines were declines in break and enters incidents, thefts of motor vehicles and thefts under $5,000.

Staff Sergeant Laura Akitt, says the decline in the statistics is showing the work RCMP members and local detachments are doing to deal with rural crime.

“We will continue to listen to the needs of the people we serve, working proactively towards the apprehension of those who commit crimes in our communities,” Akitt says.

Even with the decline residents are still being reminded to report any crimes they see to police or Crime Stoppers.
