Filmmakers in Lethbridge and southern Alberta still have a chance to submit their work to the Lethbridge Independent Film Festival being held Sept. 7-8. The submission deadline is May 31.
The festival prioritizes any film that exemplifies and/or is made by under-represented voices, but anybody can submit. Any aspect of audiovisual expression – visual, sound, narrative, genre, performance and/or theme. All approaches are encouraged for submission, including music videos.
“We’re getting a lot of exciting stuff in,” says Tess Mitchell, film festival coordinator.
“We’ve got some amazing films that have done the festival rounds across Canada and the world. There’s a bit of everything. From emerging artists to established to any scope of filmmaking. We want to support up-and-coming stuff and we’re going to partner with the University of Lethbridge with some student projects.”
Mitchell notes the screenings will be held one day at the Movie Mill and another day at the Galt Museum. “We have two screens at the Galt. An outdoor screen and an indoor screen in the viewing gallery.”
According to Mitchell, the film festival has partnered with the Toronto International Film Festival. “They will be helping us acquire films, as well. It’s not just submitted films.”
“But predominantly Canadian content and a lot of Lethbridge filmmakers too because we want to deepen the sense of belonging for our community by reflecting the world around us with a community-centred approach.”
Submissions are free and selected films get paid an artist fee. “We pay the filmmakers if they get selected,” adds Mitchell.
