St. Martha’s celebrates First Nations, Metis and Inuit students

Today, the Children of St. Martha School held its annual Community Pow-Wow, which included Bull Horn drummers, a hoop dancer and young dancers from St. Martha’s and other schools.

Facilitator Candance Bradford says the event is held to celebrate the school’s First Nations, Metis and Inuit students and their culture. “We host our pow-wow every year. We enjoy having our students being able to celebrate their unique culture and be with our community.”

Bradford adds students are excited about the event each year. “They start talking about it in September and coming up to the weeks ahead we start celebrating, go into classrooms, do presentations and pump them all up and they make their regalias.”

“We have a lot of first-year dancers this year. It’s a learning experience and it’s a great first step in for our students to feel comfortable and gain confidence,” says Bradford.

For the event, the lineup included various dance categories and community organizations had booths set up throughout the school. “To talk about the fantastic services they offer to children and families throughout the year,” says Bradford.
