Festival Square will be the place to be Friday night from 5-9 p.m. for a celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day and Go Skate Day.
Engage with inspiring speakers and enjoy performances by talented artists, including fancy dancers and Indigenous performers, celebrating a rich and cultural heritage.
Witness some of the best skateboarders compete for a share of $2,000 in cash prizes. The competition promises high-energy action and impressive tricks and enjoy free skateboarding lessons from experienced instructors – whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills.
“Anybody that wants to try it out, we’ll have skateboards and helmets available,” says Ian Gauthier from the Boarderline Skate Shop.
And it’s great teaming up with the Indigenous community for an unforgettable day. “There’s a lot of Indigenous people in Lethbridge that love skateboarding, so we’re trying to make it unique. It’s exciting to bring everybody together and make it fun for the whole family,” adds Gauthier, who has been skateboarding for over 25 years.
“So, my bones are feeling it now,” Gauthier jokes.
Gauthier offers some advice for anyone wanting to give skateboarding a try. “Everybody sucks at the beginning. It doesn’t matter who you are, you all have to start from scratch. We’re here to make it comfortable. Come on down and we’ll get you standing on a skateboard and we’ll run you through the basics to get you on your path.”
