Traffic monitoring cameras installed on Whoop-Up Drive

A new tool is anticipated to make it easier for Lethbridge drivers to plan their route through the city.

According to City of Lethbridge officials, new traffic monitoring cameras have been put up looking at both westbound and eastbound Whoop-Up Drive, along with both exit ramps onto University Drive and Scenic Drive. According to a release from the city the cameras will be on 24 hours a day and will take photos every two minutes, each photo is saved for 20 minutes.

According to a release from the city, “The cameras are used by Infrastructure Services staff for traffic engineering purposes, such as assessing the effectiveness of traffic systems and efficiency measures like traffic signal timing plans. While these traffic monitoring cameras allow the public to access real-time traffic information through the City’s website, individual vehicles or people are not monitored.”

The cameras also play a part in the Whoop-Up Drive Emergency Traffic Protocol.
