Two Cardston business owners accused of selling guns and ammunition illegally will not be going to trial.
Dean Sommerfeldt, 59, and Todd Sommerfeldt, 33, were charged in May 2017 after officers searched K & D Implements in Cardston and seized the store’s entire inventory.
Dean pleaded guilty on Monday (Sep. 9) to four total charges, including three counts of transferring weapons or ammunition without authority and one count of improperly displaying firearms.
According to an agreed statement of facts, Dean Sommerfeldt sold ammunition and three firearms to two undercover RCMP officers without ensuring they had valid Possession and Acquisition Licences (PAL). It was also found that several racks and storage cases in K & D Implements were not properly secured.
The case will be back in a Lethbridge courtroom on Dec. 9 for Dean’s sentencing.
All charges against Todd Sommerfeldt have been withdrawn, but he will be subject to a four year weapons prohibition. The Crown indicating during that hearing that it’s “not desirable in the interest of public safety” for Todd to be able to own weapons.
