Corn is one of southern Alberta’s sought-after roadside snack-tractions

Summers wouldn’t be the same in southern Alberta without a slathered-in-butter cob of Taber’s beloved and highly sought-after sweet corn. Grown to perfection, Taber corn has returned to roadside markets with majestic fanfare. Taste buds rejoice!

Kyle Molnar, from Molnar’s Taber Corn and Pumpkins in Barnwell, says the corn crop had a little bit of a rough start in the spring because of the colder weather. “Once we got that heat, it really picked up and everything started growing like crazy.”

Now, Molnar adds, things are looking phenomenal. “The corn is really looking good. We have nice big cobs.”

Typically, in an average year, the corn growing season lasts until the middle of September, Molnar notes.

There are three roadside stands throughout the area selling the farm’s corn, says Molnar. “There’s one in Barnwell, one beside the Taber Police Station and one at Leon’s in Lethbridge.”

The corn crop will continue until the cooler temperatures and frost returns to southern Alberta. “Once we get done with that, we move onto the pumpkins and those go right until Halloween,” says Molnar. “We start harvesting pumpkins Sept. 15.”

According to Molnar, the annual Pumpkin Festival begins Sept. 20 on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays.

Molnar says the family appreciates all the community support from southern Albertans.

“We look forward to seeing everyone at the stands. That’s our favourite part of farming is seeing the smile on people’s faces when they get to walk away with a fresh dozen of Taber corn.”
