6 ½-year sentences handed down to two men for roles in 2022 Coutts border blockade

Two men convicted for their roles in the 2022 Coutts border blockade have each been handed a prison sentence of six-and-a-half years.

Anthony Olienick and Chris Carbert were both convicted of mischief over $5,000 and possession of a firearm dangerous to the public peace in August 2024. Olienick was also found guilty of possession of a pipe bomb.

However, neither man was found guilty of the most serious charge: conspiracy to murder police officers at the blockade.

The duo will not serve their full sentence, as they were given approximately four years credit for time served due to them both being in custody from the pre-trial phase.

The blockade at the Coutts crossing in southern Alberta shut down traffic on both sides of the border for nearly two weeks in February 2022.
