Petwise Minute: Why Cockatoos and African Greys Are the Geniuses of the Bird World

Cockatoos are found in Australia, nearby countries, and islands, and there are 21 species.

The largest and one of the most ancient species of cockatoo is the palm cockatoo. These striking birds are all black with red markings on their faces. The males do something quite exceptional to impress the females… they drum!

They modify sticks and pods, using them to drum regular rhythms in the presence of the females, showing off their skills to a mate or potential mate.

This expressive parrot incorporates repeated elements into their drumming performance, with each bird having a recognizable individual style and cadence. Interestingly, most palm cockatoos are left-footed.

As pets, cockatoos will often dance around with their crest raised to show off to anyone paying attention. A raised crest can also be a friendly greeting or a sign of curiosity.

There are two species of the remarkable African Grey parrot: the Congo African Grey and the smaller, darker-feathered Timneh African Grey.

Parrots are known as the brainiacs of the bird world! Their brain development has been compared to that of children between the ages of 4 and 6, and their intelligence is among the highest in the animal kingdom.

They display great creativity and reasoning skills and are famous for being clear speakers and excellent mimics. As pets, they require a lot of commitment and attention.
