Here are some important safety tips to consider if you have birds in your home.
Birds have highly efficient respiratory systems, but this also makes them more fragile. Things like fumes, smoke, something burning in the kitchen, hairspray, aerosols, air fresheners, perfume, and paint fumes are extremely dangerous for birds. Additionally, many air fryers, pans, space heaters, and candles pose risks. Avoid using Teflon and never run the self-cleaning option on your oven.
Some items that birds (or any pets) could ingest, which would be very dangerous for them, include avocado, garlic, onions, chocolate, candy, and poisonous plants.
In case your pet gets into something toxic, it’s a good idea to have pet-safe charcoal on hand, and of course, always consult a vet immediately.
We carry pet-safe charcoal and bird-safe clay at Petland.
In the Amazon rainforest, parrots have a peculiar relationship with poison. Macaws can often be seen congregating at clay cliffs along the riverbanks, where they feed on damp clay. This clay acts as a medicine to help neutralize the toxins from some of the fruits and seeds they consume. It’s also a valuable source of minerals for them.
