Local athletes hit the mat this past weekend

The Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association hosted the Green and Gold Open Wrestling tournament this weekend at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, celebrating LCI’s 40th season of wrestling.

With close to 200 participants from junior and senior high school, the event was well-attended. Athletes from the program represented their school and all were able to place in the tournament, with 10 out of the 16 achieving medals from the intense competition.

“This weekend was the celebration of a landmark in our history, as we celebrate 40 years of wrestling at LCI”, says Coach and Treasurer Alan Hansen, who is also secretary of the Pronghorns Amateur Wrestling Association. “Our athletes showed up and everyone came out placing or with a medal. We are proud of what we’ve built here and how it supports children from all walks of life.”

The Lethbridge Pronghorns Wrestling Team attended the University of Saskatchewan Huskie Open this past weekend with some excellent results.

Head Coach Shawn Daye-Finley says most of the athletes have less experience than the competition they face. “Yet they are starting to challenge the top athletes in the sport. I’m personally looking forward to the evolution and growth that will see these athletes command podiums.”
