Bearded Dragons
A fairly relaxed and good-natured cold-blooded companion you can always find at Petland is the Bearded Dragon.
These Australian lizards are some of the most easy-going and calm creatures in the reptile world. They can grow to a fair size, reaching up to 2 feet in length.
Bearded Dragons are omnivores, eating a diet of insects, fruits, and vegetables. It’s essential to add calcium dust to their food to support their health.
Fun fact: In the wild, their unique head shape and contours naturally funnel water to their mouths, making them perfect rain catchers.
Here’s something nifty:
- Male Bearded Dragons bob their heads to attract females.
- When gathered in groups, they establish a social order by displaying behaviors like head bobbing. Quick bobs show dominance, while slower bobs or waving signals submission, avoiding aggression.
- They also wave to recognize members of their species.
Beardies can bond with humans by cuddling. They recognize their owners through daily feedings and become familiar with their look, smell, and voice.
Bearded Dragons love spending time in the sunshine and enjoy supervised exploration outside of their tank.
Oh, and did you know? They’re capable of running on two legs—though they don’t do it often—and can run up to 15 km/h!
One more neat trick: Bearded Dragons can sleep while standing upright, resting against a surface. How cool is that?
