26-year-old man facing charges for assaulting an officer

A Picture Butte man is facing charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

According to Taber Police Service officials, around 10:30 p.m. Sunday the suspect was reportedly breaching a release order when he was found in a vehicle outside a local business. The officer investigating also allegedly knew the man was driving earlier in the evening even though he had a suspended license.

The officer is said to have told the 26-year-old he was under arrest for breaching his release conditions when the suspect started to argue and refuse to exit the vehicle. Once he did exit the vehicle he is alleged to have hit the officer in the face with his elbow in an attempt to pull away. The officer was able to regain control of the suspect and arrested him without further incident.

Peter Giesbrecht Wiebe is facing charges including resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer. He has been remanded into custody and is next scheduled to appear in court at the end of the month.
