Pronghorns put on strong performance at Canada West track and field championships

Members of the University of Lethbridge track and field team were in Saskatchewan over the weekend, competing at the Canada West Championships. 

The event was hosted by the University of Regina on Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22, with the women’s side putting in a strong performance for the Pronghorns. 

Jinaye Shomachuk won a silver medal in the women’s shot put with a throw of 13.4 metres on Friday. She followed that with a gold medal win on Saturday in the women’s weight throw, thanks to a 19.7-metre toss. For her efforts this athletic season, Shomachuk received the Canada West Field Athlete of the Year award. 

In addition to Shomachuk’s gold, Lauryn Morris and Avery Sluik secured third (15.01 metres) and fourth place (14.68 metres), respectively, in the women’s weight throw. Jade Cullen finished fifth, with a throw of 14.42 metres. 

In the women’s 60-metre hurdles, Kimoya Edwards finished fourth. 

The focus now shifts to the 2025 U SPORTS Championships, set to take place Thursday, March 6 to Saturday, March 8 in Windsor, Ontario.
