At the end of the month, a Lethbridge-based advocacy organization will be closing its doors after what is described as an “abrupt and unforeseen loss of critical funding.”
The Board of Directors of the Southern Alberta Individualized Planning Association announced the closure after the tabling of the 2025 provincial budget.
The post read, “For many years, SAIPA has been a cornerstone of advocacy and support for individuals with disabilities across Southern Alberta. Our mission has always been to empower Self-Advocacy, promote inclusion, and ensure that the voices of individuals with disabilities are heard and respected in all areas of life. The impact of our work has been made possible through the unwavering support of our dedicated staff, volunteers, community partners, and stakeholders.”
It continued by sharing advocacy, support, and inclusion needs remains vital in the region even with the closing of their doors. The announcement shares the hope for the community to come together and “champion the rights and voices of people with disabilities. ”
“The strength of our collective efforts can and must endure, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and respect.”
The announcement also thanked the volunteers and organizations that have supported the SAIP.
“Your commitment, passion, and generosity have been instrumental in building a more inclusive and supportive community. The collaborative efforts we have shared will leave a lasting legacy, and the progress we’ve achieved together will not be forgotten.”
The SAIPA’s doors are scheduled to close on March 31st.
