Seedy Saturday is an opportunity for everyone to get excited about spring, says Environment Lethbridge Executive Director Kathleen Sheppard.
“It’s all about promoting local food and horticulture in Lethbridge,” Sheppard adds.
There are three basic components to Seedy Saturday, Sheppard explains. “We have a number of local exhibitors. We have some great workshops, and we have our seed swap and compost giveaway.”
The event will be held at the Lethbridge Public Library Downtown Branch Apr. 5 from 1-4 p.m.
According to Sheppard, there will be three workshops this year, including one on native bees. “Megan Evans with the Alberta Native Bee Council will be talking about some of our local pollinators and what homeowners can do help support them in their yards.”
Authors Sheryl Normandeau and Janet Melrose who are well-known for their Guides for the Prairie Gardener series will be talking about soil and water.
Paige Rosner from the Helen Schuler Nature Centre will be also talking about how to make an amazing front yard.
“And also talking about the Nature Centre’s new project to promote and celebrate some of the great things people can do in their front yards,” adds Sheppard.
Sheppard says the seed swap is always popular. “We encourage anyone who has seeds to bring them and find some new favourites. But you don’t have to have seeds. If you’re a new gardener or if something catches your eye, you’re welcome to come and browse through the seeds available and take some home to try.”
“We have a lot we’ve been gathering over the past year that gardeners bring. All sorts of things. You never know what you’re going to find,” says Sheppard.
Aside from this year’s Seedy Saturday event, Sheppard says Environment Lethbridge will be launching an initiative this summer to help homeowners interested in outdoor water conservation projects in their yards. “If people are looking for help to do drought-resistant landscaping, to look at alternatives to their lawns and all those kind of things – we’re going to be launching that over the summer.”
