Lethbridge wrestlers face tough competition at provincials

Members of the Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association attended the ASAA Provincial Wrestling Championships held in Calgary this past weekend.

Christian Lowry of LCI captured silver in his 68-kilogram weight division, while Thomas Ellis-Toddington captured bronze in the 76-kilogram men’s. Sydney Shields fought to a fourth-place finish in the 75-kilogram women’s division.

The LAWA squad was represented by seven athletes from LCI, and two from the newly-formed Catholic Central HS wrestling team.

Assistant Coach Kelsey Prenevost says wrestling is the hardest sport out there and just being at this level of competition is an accomplishment. “We look forward to these athletes competing in the National Championships in April of this year.”

LAWA was also this year’s recipient of the Dr. Gary Bowie Sport Event Excellence Award for their Green and Gold Wrestling tournament that has been held annually for over 40 years.

In addition, LAWA alumnus and present member of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorn Wrestling Team Payton Shields won Junior Female Athlete of the Year from the Lethbridge Sport Council.
