Residents asked to avoid emergency scenes to avoid disrupting responders

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is asking everyone to make sure they give responders plenty of space during an emergency response and avoid the scene if they can. This comes after two large house fires on Saturday, April 12.

Crews tackled the flames in the 1200 block of Pacific Circle West. No injuries were reported, but the incident caused an estimated $1.75 million in damage.

Officials say during the response, onlookers and vehicle traffic “significantly disrupted and delayed access” for crews from LFES, the Lethbridge Police Service and utility partners, with one driver crashing into a police cruiser “while distracted by the fire”. Additionally, utility crews were stalled reaching the area to shut off gas lines.

“These situations are not just inconvenient – they are dangerous,” reads a news release.

“Every second counts during an emergency. With strong winds common in Lethbridge, the risk of fire spreading quickly increases – making rapid response even more critical.”

Tips that residents can follow to help emergency crews include:

  • Avoid active fires and emergency scenes;
  • Keep roadways clear for any emergency vehicles. If lights are flashing behind you while driving, move to the side of the road and make room for emergency vehicles to pass;
  • Follow all detours and instructions from emergency personnel.

“Emergency responders need space to work. Please give them the room to respond effectively and protect lives and property. When the community works together, emergency response works better.”
