Lethbridge residents are being advised to keep an eye out for their tax notices which soon will be sent out by the City of Lethbridge administration.
Residents may notice the increase to their property taxes is higher than originally reported with the addition of the Alberta School Foundation, the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Separate Regional Division 4, the Green Acres Foundation, and the Designated Industrial Property requisition.
According to the city each $1 on a property tax bill is split up with 75 cents for the City Operating Budget including the 5.1 per cent increase, 24 cents is for Alberta Education and one cent is for Green Acres Foundation.
“The City of Lethbridge collects taxes on behalf of the Government of Alberta and the Green Acres Foundation. This is not additional City revenue. The City’s role is strictly billing and collection, with no control over their budgets, allocations or operations,” City administration explains in a statement. “For 2025, the requisition percentage change for the education tax is up 13.8 per cent. For comparison: in 2024, it was up 6.1 per cent, and for 2023, it was up 3.2 per cent.”
Money from the education tax is reported to be used to contribute to equitable funding for K-12 education in Lethbridge, with the provincial education requisition also helping support the city’s growing student population.
Property tax notices will be mailed out on May 13th and payments will be due by June 30th. During Tuesday’s regular council meeting, Lethbridge City Council passed the by-law that will allow a tax instalment Pre-Payment Plan.
