Patio season is back in Lethbridge, as the City of Lethbridge’s Outdoor Patios, Parklets and Street Vending program returns.
The program allows businesses to transform streets and sidewalks into vibrant spaces for people to gather and enjoy. These spaces support local businesses, beautify the city and create welcoming spots for everyone.
Following a pilot project, the program started in 2020. It gave businesses free outdoor space to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. With operations now stabilized, the initiative is shifting to a cost-recovery model. Small administrative and space-use fees will support long-term success.
City Urban Revitalization Administrator Justin Schipper says the program allows businesses to expand their customer base and adds to the revitalization efforts of the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ.
Schipper notes the feedback has been good and businesses love it because it gives customers an opportunity to sit outside and get some fresh air.
Currently, there are six parklets out and about. “And about that many minor patios, where businesses are just placing their tables and chairs on City sidewalk space,” adds Schipper. “We have about two physical parklets to give out. If those could be used up that would be fantastic.”
Jacob Ramsdell is the manager of The Penny Coffee House, located in downtown Lethbridge. “It’s a great thing for all the customers. They all do look forward to it, as we’ve been in the program since its inception.”
