Spring planting in Alberta saw a significant jump during the week ending May 13.Â
The latest crop report shows seeding at 47 per cent complete across the province. That is well ahead of the five-year historical average of 26 per cent for the week. The report states that progress of all major crops is ahead of both the five and 10-year averages.Â
Southern Alberta saw the most significant progress at 76 per cent, up from 46 per cent the previous week. The other regions across Alberta saw growth as well:Â
- Central advanced to 51 per cent doneÂ
- Northeast progressed to 37 per cent completeÂ
- Northwest was at 29 per cent seededÂ
- The Peace region was at 27 per doneÂ
Dry peas were listed as the furthest along for all of Alberta, at 74 per cent.Â
Spring wheat was close behind at 66 per cent. Barley was at 49 per cent, with canola at 24 per cent, and oats at 17 per cent.Â
Areas of the province saw some precipitation, with the report rating surface soil moisture levels, from the ground to six inches down, at 59 per cent.Â
