A friendly “soup off” competition was held Thursday, at the Green Acres Foundation’s Blue Sky Lodge senior living community as part of their celebration for Seniors’ Week in Alberta.
Residents from nine of the senior communities gathered together for a day of fun, food and live music.
The winning soup from the competition will be featured on the fall and winter menu. The winner was from Blue Sky Lodge/Golden Acres Lodge and Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup w/crème fraiche and Grilled Cheese Croutons was the winning soup.
Judges included Mayor Blaine Hyggen, Deputy Fire Chief Wes Borland and residents representing their senior community.
Green Acres Foundation CEO Dawna Coslovi says the first week in June is Seniors’ Week. “It gives people the opportunity to recognize the contributions and the lives these people have lived.”
“A lot of the seniors around the province are the ones who pioneered first, they tried different things and they made this province strong. It’s one week we can give back and say thank you,” Coslovi adds.
With the soup competition, Coslovi notes, the soups were all made in-house. “By our own chefs.”
“We invited residents from all the lodges to come. I was talking to one of the residents and he said, ‘I see my old neighbour.’ The contribution and the connections residents can make with one another is fabulous,” says Coslovi.
