A significant amount of drugs were seized downtown this week by members of the Lethbridge Police Service.
According to officials, officers seized more than $372,000 worth of fentanyl, meth and cocaine after responding to a report of drug trafficking activity downtown.
On Wednesday, police responded to a downtown parking lot around 2 p.m., for the complaint. When they arrived on scene they found a man and woman inside a vehicle. The woman allegedly gave police a fake name to start, but once police had her real name they confirmed she was wanted on outstanding warrants and was breaching the conditions of a previous release order.
Police reportedly searched the vehicle in connection to the arrest and located a sawed-off .22 calibre shotgun, approximately 1,137 grams of fentanyl, 120 grams of cocaine, 58 grams of meth and nearly $10,000.
Police say the man was also found with an additional 35 grams of fentanyl, 29 grams of meth, along with several knives and a baton.
Sargent Ryan Darroch with the Downtown Policing Unit says this seizure is the single largest fentanyl seizure in the city.
“The quantity seized is worth more than $350,000 and equates to just over 11,700 street doses that will no longer reach our vulnerable population,” Darroch says.
In addition to the fentanyl the meth and cocaine are worth $27,000 combined.
The man and woman, who are both 48 years old and from Lethbridge, are each facing several drug-related charges, with the woman facing additional charges for drug trafficking. The woman has since been remanded into custody and the man was released.
