Visibility is important, especially during Pride Month

There’s plenty of events happening throughout June to celebrate Pride Month in Lethbridge.

“The bulk of our main events are happening between June 20 and June 28,” notes Lethbridge Pride Fest Chair Cassaundra Fayant.

On June 20, it’s the Pride Awards, followed by the Trans March June 22, the official Pride Flag Raising June 23 at 6 p.m. at City Hall and the Pride Parade, Pride in the Park and Pride Dance June 28.

The 17th annual parade begins at 11 a.m., followed by day-long celebrations in Galt Gardens from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We’ve got a lot of fun stuff for Pride in the Park. We’ve got a lot of different performers and we have our marketplace. We’ve got a lot of things on the go for it. It’ll be a good time for everyone,” adds Fayant.

According to Fayant, Pride Month is important because visibility is so important for people. “Especially, for young queer and trans youth that don’t see the representation everywhere, when they should.”

“It’s important to celebrate the distances we’ve made, as far as equality for 2SLGBTQIA people, but also to continue to put in the work and to fight for the distance we have yet to come,” Fayant explains.

The society has the capacity to have up to 12 board members, and is looking to fill seats. “Currently, I believe we have 10. We rely on the help of volunteers from our community to help make sure the events are a success.”

Fayant adds the society is also looking for volunteers. “As our former president liked to say, ‘many hands make light work.’”

Fayant would like to invite everyone to attend any or all events going on this month. “We have a lot of great partner events with different organizations. There’s definitely something for everybody and we look forward to celebrating with everyone.”
