Residents displaced following south Lethbridge fire

The Canadian Red Cross and City of Lethbridge are helping multiple residents displaced by a Friday morning fire.

At around 3:20 a.m., crews from four Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services stations were sent out to the blaze at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of 20 Avenue South.

When they arrived, flames were seen coming from a unit on the third floor.

Crews started attacking the fire from the outside of the building to cool it down before entering the apartment to search for residents and knock down the flames from the inside.

Officials say several occupants were saved after becoming trapped on their balconies due to heavy smoke in the hallways.

No injuries were reported, but about 10 residents were displaced because of the damage caused by the fire and smoke. Damage is estimated at $500,000.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
