Lethbridge Police and other law enforcement agencies across the province are focusing on impaired driving throughout July.
LPS officials are reminding drivers the only safe option is to drive sober as one in 13 drivers involved in a fatal crash is legally impaired.
According to stats from the Province of Alberta, most incidents happen between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on weekends and the top group of individuals involved in 2021 was

Drivers are also being reminded that cannabis can cause impaired driving as it impacts reaction time, memory and focus. When combined with alcohol officials say the impact is made worse. Also, those who take edibles are reminded that the effects of this form of cannabis can take longer to be felt and can last longer, those who partake in this sort of recreational activity are told not to assume they are safe to drive.
Police say drug use in night drivers is more common than alcohol. Drivers are urged by LPS to always plan for a safe ride home and anyone who suspects they are witnessing an impaired driver is urged to contact 9-1-1.
