A pair of exhibitions focused on a journey with nature will soon be on display at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin.
The exhibits focus on exploring personal, ecological, and political aspects of the natural environment through the artist’s work.
The two exhibitions, ‘forest documents’ by Leila Sujir and ‘Something Given’ by Namaakii Bee Bear Hat, open on Saturday at the gallery and will be on display until October.
‘forest documents’ is described as a collection of Sujir’s ongoing research and multimedia works of Vancouver Island’s Walbran Forest. Using video, audio, and printed material, viewers have the chance to take part in “shaping the vast, intertwined roots of personal, colonial, and environmental issues” that cover the forest.
Namaakii Bee Bear Hat’s solo exhibition, ‘Something Given’, reflects on the lessons and knowledge of being self-sufficient on the land passed through generations. The work reflects on “the ties that bind her to the traditional Blackfoot territory she calls home”.
Both exhibits will be on display until October 18.
