Safety reminders issued for drivers following Highway 3 collision

A collision on Highway 3 Monday night has prompted the City of Lethbridge to issue safety reminders for drivers.

Members of Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services responded to the Highway 3 bridge shortly before 6 p.m. on August 18, with officials saying two tractor trailers collided on the bridge going westbound.

Crews were required to stay on scene until around 1 a.m. to support the safe offloading and recovery of the vehicles involved.

Officials note an extensive cleanup was needed because of the cargo involved, which included food products. The City says no hazardous materials entered the Oldman River.

Drivers are being reminded to:

  • Give each other space and time, and ensure they slow down to react to any situation in a safe manner;
  • Slow down and move over when passing emergency vehicles with their lights on;
  • Follow instructions from emergency responders;
  • Plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid congestion and reduce the risk of any collisions.

The crossings linking west and east Lethbridge have been in the spotlight lately.

In early August, an incident under the Whoop-Up Drive bridge led to the road’s full closure for multiple hours. The damage to the bridge continues to be assessed.
