BACKGROUND
A 34-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged assault in north Lethbridge.
The Lethbridge Police Service says at around 12 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, officers and EMS responded to a report of an injured 80-year-old man along the 1200 block of 2A Avenue North.
The LPS says its investigation found that the senior’s bike had been stolen from outside a business. The senior then reportedly confronted the suspect, which led to a physical altercation. Police say the suspect punched the senior, which caused him to fall backward and hit his head on the pavement.
LPS notes the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.
The 80-year-old victim was taken to Chinook Regional Hospital by EMS. Because of the extent of his injuries, he was then airlifted to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, where police say he remains in critical condition.
Witnesses of the incident provided police with photos of the suspect, with LPS then identifying him. At around 8 p.m. Wednesday, police say the suspect called LPS dispatch to turn himself in. He was then arrested at a northside home without incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and police say charges are pending.
