Library hosts Mayoral Election Forum Oct. 7

With the Municipal Election coming up Oct. 20, the Lethbridge Public Library is offering a few activities to coincide with the event, plus a plethora of other activities.

On Oct. 3, a Pink Tea will celebrate the launch of The Famous Five Maquette Trailblazers Tour in Lethbridge.

The tour will introduce Albertans to “provincial heroes and inspire the next generation of trailblazers to be leaders and nation builders.”

Pink Teas are modern gatherings that encourage lively conversations and the development of solutions for equality issues that still are a challenge today.

Registration is required for the event, which runs 1:30-3 p.m. in the Main Branch Community Meeting Room.

“The Famous Five were the people who first got the right for women to vote and to be recognized as people,” notes Resource Sharing Librarian Jonathan Jarvie. “It’s the first time a case of this size ever happened in North America. We’re going to have some little statues for an art exhibit of each of the Famous Five people.”

According to Jarvie, Pink Teas were once a creative form of resistance, where women disguised them as social gatherings – where they could organize for suffrage without interference from opponents. “These teas are open to everyone. Modern gatherings encourage lively conversations and the development of solutions for equality issues that still exist today.”

There are still a few spots left. To register, please visit the library’s website.

On Oct. 4 at the Main Branch, book a five-minute one-on-one meeting with council candidates, with the library’s Chat with a Councillor Candidate event.

“Get the answers you need to make an informed decision,” the Library notes.

Registration is required and the event runs from 1-4 p.m.

The Main Branch also hosts a Mayoral Election Forum Oct. 7 from 6-8 p.m. This traditional forum will feature a moderator with questions from a media panel and from the audience.

International best-selling and award-winning author Emma Donoghue will be delivering a talk and will be signing books Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Main Branch.

Tickets are available for the special event at the Main Branch Customer Service Desk or at Analog Books. Analog Books will have copies of the author’s books on-hand for the signing portion of the evening.

“She’s most famous for the book Room, which has been made into a movie. And she’s been up for several different awards,” adds Jarvie. “She’ll be delivering a talk about her book, talking about libraries and the importance of reading in-general and doing a book signing afterwards.”
