January PATs, diploma exams cancelled

The provincial government has cancelled January Provincial Achievement Tests and diploma exams.

The Province of Alberta announcement was made on Friday, saying the cancelation is to ensure students and teachers can concentrate on learning after lost instructional time.

According to the announcement, “The cancellation will not affect students’ ability to apply to, be accepted by, or attend post-secondary institutions.”

Students will have the option to take the test at a later date if they want, but if the student chooses not to take the exam, they will be given their school-awarded mark as their final mark for the course. According to the government, there will be a note added to the student’s transcript confirming that no diploma exam was written, making sure it will not impact the students’ ability to graduate or go into post-secondary programs.

As well, school authorities may make changes to the school calendar to ensure that learning outcomes for the school year are met.
