Strike averted as nursing-care workers secure tentative agreement

Negotiators were able to reach a tentative agreement just before nursing care members strike was scheduled to start.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees says the deal covers wages, benefits and shift premiums. Licensed practical nurses will see a 23.81 per cent total wage increase, while health-care aides will get 17.05 per cent. All members will receive a three-per cent general wage increase annually. LPNs will also get a 10 per cent market adjustment and HCAs a four-per cent market adjustments applied retroactively as of April 1, 2024.

AUPE called the deal “a new standard for all health-care workers and Alberta’s labour movement.”

In addition, HCAs will move to a restructured pay-scale grid, with the bottom two steps removed.

Members will review the agreement in upcoming town halls before voting on ratification.

The strike was set to begin Saturday, Nov. 22, when care facilities and hospitals would have operated with only essential services.
