RCMP investigate fatal three-vehicle crash in rural southern Alberta

Police are investigating a collision on Nov. 18 that claimed the life of a 22-year-old man from Coaldale.

Brooks RCMP said Mounties, along with EMS and firefighters from the Scandia and Rolling Hills departments, responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 873.

Officials said three vehicles — a van, a semi-truck and an SUV — collided at an intersection. Each vehicle had only one occupant.

Investigators allege the westbound van ignored a stop sign and struck the semi-truck’s trailer, which was then forced into the oncoming lane striking a southbound SUV.

The driver of the van, a 22-year-old man from Coaldale, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 47-year-old woman driving the SUV, from the Vauxhall area, was extricated, taken to a local hospital, then transported to a Calgary hospital in stable condition. The semi-truck driver was uninjured.

Brooks RCMP said a collision reconstructionist attended the scene to support the investigation.
