U of L’s student breakfast program raises over $20K

The 2025 Buy a Student a Breakfast campaign was a major success.

The program saw community members donate a gift that was used to purchase a breakfast coupon for a University of Lethbridge student.

The post-secondary says in total, $20,418 was raised. This resulted in 3,403 breakfast coupons being purchased for students as they head into their final exams.

“The generosity shown by those who give to this campaign always amazes me, and to see we more than doubled our support for students this year is a testament to how much our community cares,” says University of Lethbridge Alumni Association president Cyndi Crane, adding the coupons help students start their day off right.

“Even more than that, it sends a message that they have an entire community of people in their corner, looking out for them. That means more than anything.”

Each coupon is valued at $10, with U of L food provider Chartwells donating $4 and those who donated to the campaign covering the remaining $6.

In 2024, nearly $10,000 was raised and 1,560 coupons were purchased.

Officials note continued support of the program is encouraging, especially as food insecurity remains a hot topic for everyone.

“From the very first day of the campaign, we could see that people understood the challenges students are facing and were eager to help,” says U of L philanthropy advisor Christa Merrell.

“This is a very caring community. We’ve seen that time and time again and having heard how thankful the students are when they receive their coupons, it’s apparent this is very meaningful to them.”
