The University of Lethbridge is looking for its next chancellor.
Terry Whitehead’s four-year term in the role comes to an end on March 15, 2027. Whitehead is the 15th chancellor in the post-secondary institution’s history.
“Working and collaborating with our Senate to advocate for our university has been extremely rewarding,” said Whitehead. “The Senate is fully engaged and passionate about advancing the extraordinary research, teaching, campus activities, campaigns and events that happen on campus. The Senate’s enthusiasm is infectious and a joy to behold.”
He added, “This diverse group has been wonderful to work with and an honour to lead.”
Officials said the hope is that Whitehead’s successor, who will be the U of L’s 16th chancellor, will be a “visible, collaborative individual who is deeply committed to the institution, its students and community”.
The next chancellor will be joining the U of L as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.
The post-secondary’s president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Digvir Jayas thanked Whitehead for his enthusiasm over the last four years.
“As an engaged and philanthropic alumnus, Terry had always been connected to our university in multiple ways, and throughout his term as chancellor he championed some really innovative programs centred around the student experience and specifically food security initiatives,” Dr. Jayas stated.
The role of chancellor is a volunteer position, and the individual in the role represents the public interest of the university. The chancellor serves as chair of the University Senate, with officials noting they are an ex officio member of the Board of Governors, serving as an ambassador for the U of L locally, provincially, and beyond.
Officials added that the chancellor presides over all degree-confirming ceremonies and confers all degrees and represents the university at ceremonial events.
NOMINATIONS
The U of L said nominees for the role must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, possess a strong interest in university-community affairs and education, and have proper time to complete all duties involved.
Officials said the role is voluntary with no remuneration.
The nomination forms require the names and addresses of three nominators, the signed consent of the nominee, and any supporting documents.
They will be accepted by the Senate Office until Nov. 12, 2026, with the successful candidate taking office on March 16, 2027.
