Alberta will launch a new round of public consultations on nuclear energy, offering both online and in-person sessions.
The sessions, convened by the Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel, will examine how nuclear power could help Alberta meet future electricity needs and give Albertans a chance to provide feedback.
Parliamentary Secretary for Affordability and Utilities Chantelle de Jonge said it is critical the province reliably meet rising demand for electricity.
“The Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel is excited to start meeting directly with Albertans and hear what they have to say about the role nuclear power could play in our energy future,” she said.
Upcoming virtual information sessions are scheduled for Dec. 8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon and Dec. 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A webinar on nuclear safety and waste management is set for Jan. 16 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Those interested in participating are advised to register online.
Officials say feedback collected during these sessions will inform a report of recommendations that will be sent to the Minister of Affordability and Utilities by March 31.
Under a recently signed memorandum of understanding between the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada, the province has committed to collaborate on a nuclear generation strategy by Jan. 1, 2027. The plan aims to build competitive nuclear power generation capable of serving Alberta and interconnected markets by 2050.
