Southern Alberta Ethnic Association offering 27th annual free holiday dinner

The Southern Alberta Ethnic Association is all set for the return of a holiday tradition.

On Saturday, December 20, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the association hosts its 27th annual Community Christmas Dinner at the Multicultural Centre.

“It’s a gathering – just feeling the spirit of the season together”, says Fund and Program Developer Jackie Stambene.

She explains anyone is welcome to stop by the Multicultural Centre for a delicious holiday dinner, which will feature the classic staples such as turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, buns and butter, and dessert.

“We want to make people’s Christmases very special, and some people may not have the opportunity to share in a dinner or have a nice experience,” Stambene says.

“We do nice linens on the table; we do decorations to make it feel like they’re not just coming through an assembly line for dinner. People come around and talk to you, and enjoy your company. It’s very heartwarming.”

The event will feature live music from Jamani Duo, adding to the festive atmosphere.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT

Stambene says the event would not be possible without the hard work of volunteers.

“I have some long-term volunteers that actually cook the dinner, peel potatoes, do all of these things, so they start cooking three or four days out from the event. We’re going to be cooking a number of turkeys and hams and whatnot, so the place is buzzing for days and days before the event,” she states.

“As a nonprofit, we have limited staff and limited resources, so we really appreciate what our volunteers can do to help out.”

Stambene adds that the event also received a financial boost from the City of Lethbridge Community Event Support Grant. She says dignitaries will be on-hand serving dinner.

“It’s just really nice how people come together and support each other for that one.”

The SAEA Community Christmas Dinner is from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 20 at the Multicultural Centre in Lethbridge.
