Damage assessments underway after incident at Taber Community Centre

The cause of an incident at the Community Centre in Taber is under investigation.

Emergency crews responded to the facility on Wednesday afternoon, December 17. Officials say preliminary information suggests an explosion occurred in the arena area. However, the latest update from the Town states that the investigation is ongoing and “no conclusions have been reached at this time”.

No injuries were reported, and all staff and patrons were accounted for. The building was evacuated as part of the emergency response.

Officials say there is extensive damage in parts of the Community Centre. Detailed damafe assessments are underway. Additionally, as part of the emergency response protocols, officials note the ammonia plant was safely isolated, “and is not a cause for concern”.

The public is asked to stay away from the affected areas while the investigation continues.

The Town has provided an update on facilities:

  • The Aquafun Centre is undamaged and remains open under regular hours;
  • The Auditorium is undamaged, but is closed due to the gas being shut off to the Centre;
  • The Large and Small Ice arenas are closed until further notice due to damage;
  • The Curling Club is closed until further notice due to damage;
  • Leased facilities within the Community Centre are closed pending safety reviews.

On the roads, the Town says 48th Avenue is closed until further notice, as is the parking lot at the Community Centre. The parking lot at the Aquafun Centre remains open.

Community Centre users with ice bookings will be contacted by staff regarding any cancellations, rescheduling, or next steps related to their bookings.

The Town adds that information on other impacts to programs and services will be shared once decisions are confirmed.

Crews will continue to conduct damage assessments, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

“We ask the public to avoid speculation, rumours, and misinformation,” the Town adds.

“The Town of Taber thanks emergency responders, utility partners, staff, and residents for their calm cooperation during a serious and rapidly evolving incident. Those efforts ensured everyone was able to remain safe.”

Further updates will be posted on the Town of Taber website and social media channels.
