Lethbridge now has a pair of new paved pathways aimed at improving safety and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.
The city says Pathway 17, located along 43 Street South and South Parkside Drive South, links into the green strip trail on Lakeview Drive South, creating a continuous loop for users in the area.
The project also includes two new pedestrian crosswalks — one at the intersection of 43 Street South and 20 Avenue South, and another at 43 Street South and Forestry Avenue South. Each crossing features a deceleration lane for southbound vehicles turning west, with the city urging motorists to slow down and use caution when travelling through the area.
A second project, Pathway 200, runs along 28 Street North. The three-metre-wide asphalt trail stretches from Giffen Road North to Cavendish Road North, before connecting to the sidewalk along Blackwolf Boulevard North.
A new crosswalk has been installed at the Blackwolf Boulevard North intersection and is equipped with rectangular rapid flashing beacons — bright, pedestrian-activated lights designed to improve visibility for drivers. An additional crosswalk has also been added across the side street at Giffen Road North.
City officials say Pathway 200 provides safer access to the industrial area east of 28 Street North, while also offering a convenient option for commuters who walk or bike. The route is also expected to be used for recreation.
Both pathway projects include upgraded lighting at three major intersections to improve visibility and safety.
