FCSS focus for 2026 is to ‘be there for people’

In 2026, Family and Community Support Services is focused on being there for people.

Executive Director Zakk Morrison says FCSS knows things are tough from an emotional, mental, physical and economic perspective.

“We want to ensure people know there’s supports available for them in their community. In our service area, we’re able to offer a variety of different supports for people,” he notes.

Heading into 2026, Morrison adds, FCSS knows it can be overwhelming and stressful. “We want people to know there’s people there to support them in their communities. We have a lot of exciting programs we do annually that’ll be coming up again.”

One initiative is the Community Volunteer Income Tax program.

“Supports for people and a reminder for people to complete their income taxes and support for those who are eligible to receive assistance filing their income tax,” he says.

Seniors’ Week is also coming up in June, and FCSS will feature its Cheers to Volunteers Awards program in the next couple of months, “which celebrates volunteers and those who are making the extra efforts within their community to make our neighbourhoods and our communities stronger and better places,” Morrison explains.

“We’re also focused on our youth leadership program, which is called the Do Crew. Our Do Crew youth are teenagers that take on different community initiatives with the support of our FCSS team to try to strengthen and improve communities,” says Morrison. “We’re going to have a strong focus on building that program and revitalize and re-energize it to try to increase the number of youth participating across our service area.”

Currently, it’s a wait and see scenario for any new additions to the FCSS programming lineup.

“We have a couple of things in the works. A couple of grants we’ve applied for. We got our fingers crossed those are going to come through. Sometime in February or March, we’re hoping to make some exciting announcements,” notes Morrison.

According to Morrison, the FCSS team can’t do what they do without their partners. “In our service area, it’s really a collaborative effort. We work well with our municipalities and the other service providers. It’s a team effort, a collaborative effort that helps to build strong communities.”
