Blood Tribe declares State of Emergency after recent dog attacks

A State of Emergency has been declared by Blood Tribe Chief and Council.

Officials note this comes after a string of recent dog attacks that have created “a serious and immediate risk to public safety”.

The State of Emergency was issued under the Emergency Protection Bylaw. Additionally, animal control officers must enforce the Dog Control Bylaw, which includes seizing and removing aggressive dogs from the care and control of their owners where required to protect the safety of the community.

Once any aggressive dogs are seized, they will be assessed by a licensed veterinarian. The veterinarian will offer recommendations on further steps, with additional measures having to comply with the Dog Control Bylaw.

Residents are asked to be cautious and on alert for any aggressive dogs, with parents and caregivers asked to closely supervise children.

Anyone with concerns or who spots any aggressive dogs is asked to contact the Blood tribe Land Management Department – Livestock Control Officers (Animal Control Officers) at 403-634-9419.

The State of Emergency will remain in effect until further notice.
