Lethbridge’s Southern Alberta Ethnic Association celebrates Black excellence during Black History Month throughout February.
Fund and Program Developer Jackie Stambene says posters are displayed on easels around the Multicultural Centre’s entry way, which include interviews with African community leaders from past to present.
“That’s one thing we’re doing,” Stambene notes. “We’ve got videos of a lot of our community groups on YouTube, and we’re going to be posting those regularly throughout the month for our African and Caribbean groups.”
The SAEA has partnered with the BIPOC Foundation (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) for two events.
A Black Movie Night is being held Feb. 20 at the Centre from 5-9 p.m., featuring professionals, students and hobbyists showcasing Black history and storytelling.
On Feb. 28, the SAEA will present a Black History Month Showcase at the Galt Museum and Archives from 4-9 p.m.
This event will include a pitch competition, talent show, performances and exhibits celebrating Black excellence in the community.
Stambene hopes everyone will check out the Centre’s foyer to read the stories and histories shared by African leaders in the community. “There’s different questions posed to them. You see how their arrival has affected them and some of their story, as they’ve developed when they arrived in Lethbridge.”
Volunteers are always needed for many of the events, including for Black Movie Night.
“It will be really interesting to see the different concepts from the different individuals,” Stambene adds.
