In March, the Lethbridge Public Library hosts plenty of activities and events for the whole family.
On Mar. 5, it’s Young at Heart: A Regency Party, which is steeped in tea, sprinkled with Jane Austen wit and served with a dash of Mr. Darcy.
The event will be held at the Crossings Branch from 6-7:30 p.m.
“Just a fun little Pride and Prejudice-themed tea, and that’s for adults. It’s our program that’s connected to getting adults to connect with play again, so it should be super fun,” says Online Services Librarian Jennifer McDevitt.
According to McDevitt, the inspiration for the tea came from another library that held a similar event.
“They have a social worker whose main area of study is the connection to play and how it helps to play when you’re an adult. We did Nerf battles at first, and those were really well-attended. We’re doing it with all different themes every month at the Crossings Branch,” notes McDevitt.
On Mar. 15 at the Main Branch, students are invited to a Spelling Bee and Mini Bee between 1-5 p.m.
The Mini Bee is for children in Grades 1–3, and the Spelling Bee is for Grades 4–6.
Children’s Services Library Assistant Dax Law says the spelling bees are run every year. “It’s an opportunity for kids to brush up on their spelling skills and compete in a fun event. They have an opportunity to win a big trophy, and have it presented by a member of Lethbridge City Council.”
“We’re always looking for more spellers, so if more people want to register, there’s still time,” Law notes. “And we have a practice session coming up for students that haven’t had a chance to do a spelling bee before.”
According to Law, the event is a great opportunity for kids to practice what they’re learning in school and maybe go a little bit above and beyond. “If they want to feel challenged, they have the opportunity to go all the way up to nineth grade words if they keep on progressing.”
There’s an Income Tax Clinic being held at the Main Branch Mar. 17 from 5-8 p.m.
Get free help preparing your taxes from community volunteers, in partnership with the Womanspace Resource Centre.
This service is available to all individuals with an income below $35,000 a year or couples with a combined income below $45,000 (plus $2,500 for each dependent).
“So, like any simple tax situation, we can help out with,” adds McDevitt. “We’ll be having more in April. We also help with taxes year-round. I have a volunteer base I set people up with when they come to ask for help in the clinic.”
