Advance voting open for 2026 Alberta referendum

Advance voting for the Alberta referendum opened on Tuesday.

Elections Alberta forecasts a voter turnout of between 80 and 85 per cent, with the advance polls open in communities until Saturday, Oct. 17.

General voting day for the referendum is Monday, Oct. 19.

The referendum includes 10 questions on topics like immigration policy, constitutional reform, and if Alberta should remain a part of Canada or start the legal process of holding a second, binding referendum on separation.

In his Thanksgiving address Monday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is working and “building big” right now but noted that big things cannot be built on fault lines, adding the world has changed.

“Canada is facing real threats to our economy, to our security, to our way of life. We have to be strong, and we are stronger together,” he stated. “Generations of Albertans helped build this country. It is yours, it’s ours, and it’s worth fighting for.

There are multiple advance voting locations, and residents can find theirs through the Elections Alberta website.

Friday, Oct. 16 is the last day that Elections Alberta can receive special ballot packages.

Further voter details, including eligibility information, are available on the 2026 provincial referendum webpage.
