Catholic Central High School presents Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, alongside a guest children’s chorus made up of students from St. Patrick Fine Arts Elementary and St. Paul School.
The production runs March 12–21 with both matinee and evening performances.
Producer and co-vocal director Jessica Ens says there were a few titles floating around for this year’s production before choosing the beloved classic. “We have a children’s chorus joining us for this show, which is really special. And that sort of community building aspect of the show and having students from other schools join the cast was part of what tipped the scales for us. It’s a shorter show and it’s a fuller musical, and there’s not a lot of talky bits.”
Ens adds it just felt right, and it checked all the boxes for us.
According to Ens, there’s over 25 cast and nine backstage crew members.
“We started rehearsals in November, so they’re very eager to get an audience in front of them. They’ve been working hard for months,” Ens notes. Everyday after school, Fridays and weekends. It’s been a long haul for them.”
The musical marks CCHS student Katy Sawa’s third and final year of being a part of the annual productions. “I first started with Wizard of Oz, and we moved to Mamma Mia, and now we’re doing Joseph. I really like it. It’s a nice range.”
Sawa is the narrator in this year’s show. “It’s a bunch of music. It’s really nice to interact with not only my cast, but also to interact with the littles, as well. I’ve never got to do that before.”
Sawa hopes audience members get involved with the story.
“There’s a lot of meaning behind it.” says Sawa.
