Volunteer fair in Taber aims to recruit, recognize helpers

A handful of Taber organizations will host a volunteer fair aimed at recruiting new helpers and recognizing those already giving their time during National Volunteer Week.

Naomi Leib, manager of the Taber Food Bank Society, said the event, held in partnership with Taber Adult Learning, will open both organizations’ doors to the public for tours and information sessions on Thursday.

“We’re just trying to find volunteers throughout our community and celebrate them as well,” Leib said. “There’s lots of agencies and organizations in our community that wouldn’t be able to operate without the help of volunteers — and the food bank is one of those.”

Leib added that about a dozen local groups are expected to take part, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Safe Haven Women’s Shelter, Taber Child Care Society and the 4-H Club.

She said attendees can visit booths, learn about volunteer opportunities and take part in a ‘volunteer passport’ activity — collecting signatures from participating groups for a chance to win a gift card.

Leib said the fair is designed to appeal to a wide range of schedules and interests, from one-time commitments to ongoing roles.

“Some organizations are looking for board members … maybe once a month,” she said. “Others might be looking for volunteers that can help one day a week.”

The food bank continues to see growing demand and is seeking additional help, particularly with summer approaching.

“We’re looking for volunteers for our fundraising events, spare drivers to help pick up store donations, and people to assist with food sorting and preparation.”

She said volunteer availability often dips during the summer months as regular helpers take vacations or shift priorities.

Despite the ongoing need, Leib said the community remains strong in its support.

“We have a very giving community, so we’re very lucky to live where we do.”

The volunteer recruitment fair runs Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Taber Food Bank and Taber Adult Learning.
