To mark an important milestone in the City of Lethbridge’s ongoing commitment to safer streets, the City’s road safety project is now complete.
According to the City, the goal of this project was to create an integrated Traffic Safety Culture Framework to help reduce traffic‑related injuries, fatalities and collisions caused by risky driving behaviours.
As part of this project, almost every elementary school in Lethbridge now has a School Travel Plan.
These plans look at how children travel each day and identify simple, practical ways to improve safety for walking, biking, and rolling to school.
Transportation Engineer Adam St. Amant said road safety is about more than infrastructure.
“It’s about behaviours, awareness, and shared responsibility. This project brought together data, community input and best practices to help influence lasting change in how we think about safety on our roads, especially around schools,” St. Amant noted.
In addition to benefiting Lethbridge, the final materials, programs and processes developed through this project will be shared nationally, allowing other municipalities across Canada to reuse and adapt the work.
This will include a School Travel Planning Intervention Toolkit, which will help schools and cities choose solutions that make sense for their own neighbourhoods.
